Quick post today. Just loving on this new black denim jacket I grabbed at a thrift store. I have been searching for one with the right fit, hits right at the hips, slightly oversized, yet slim fitting. Does such a jacket even exist? Well yes, yes it does when you purchase a men’s small. I kept my look super simple with distressed black denim skinny jeans (with raw hem), a white tank and my favorite Zara Chelsea boots. Lighting was also on my side. Working full time I either have mornings or evenings to shoot looks and with the days getting longer I’m actually really enjoying shooting around 6pm. Not to mention you get some cool shadow play.

I’m pretty much working for the weekend as of late. I can’t tell you how excited I am for a trip this weekend! Checkout my Instagram for a peek into my much needed vacation. Felt like getting a tad dressed up today so I threw on my Forever21 wide leg denim jeans and my favorite button up by Joe Fresh. Anytime I have trouble getting dressed in the morning I always try to grab one staple and one attention grabbing piece. In this case with the slow reintroduction of wide leg denim I’d say that along with the hat are the attention grabbers while the blouse and blazer help balance everything back out.

I really recommend grabbing yourself a Joe Fresh button up blouse, these things are buttery soft and although they wrinkle with the slightest movement it’s really worth the comfort factor (I could fall asleep in this thing!) On a side note I’ve been feeling really nostalgic about my blog lately and really grateful to all of my readers, followers, and supporters throughout the years. Although fashion is my lifestyle I really am happy to have found a “hobby” with so many amazing people attached to it. – Rant done.

Paper Bag Trouser

As odd as they are so called, I’m in love with the silhouette of paper bag trousers. Something about a high waist, tapered leg and all the loose fit in-between parts work for my body type. I also (as noted in my previous post) am getting back into the swing of cropped tops (thanks 90s Jennifer Aniston & Netflix!). This crop is from CSBLA and again, it doesn’t disappoint. The neckline is a big deal for me, it has a slight boatneck fit which I think hits all the right spots on your collarbone. Not to mention the fabric feels oh so nice on (none of that thin stuff your used to). I wasn’t sure how the outfit would look together but the tightness on top with the somewhat loose fit on bottom mixed with a little heel makes for the perfect day to night look.

Earlier that day my cousin and I ventured out to LA for lunch or “brunch” before heading to see the last showing of Wicked at Pantages Theatre. While it was melting outside I swapped my heels for sandals earlier in the day and dressed it up for the show later on. I tell you these pants are worth it and not to mention they are a lot lighter than they appear, hence for me wearing them on one of our warmest days of Marcy. (Originally I figured a wool blend type trouser). Shop my look above and happy weekend folks!

CSBLA Basics

I was recently introduced to CSBLA and instantly connected with their amazing array of high quality basics. Living by the principle that you can be comfortable without sacrificing style and fit, Cosabella (CSBLA) brings Italian luxury into your everyday wardrobe. I am a firm believer in investing in staple wardrobe pieces that will last you through the years. One of my favorite bottoms that I can always count on are my thrifted Calvin Klein high waisted jeans which I paired with my CSBLA Rimini Crop Top. To add a little something extra I threw on my new flat top fedora hat from Yellow108 (one of my new favorite hat companies). With the recent heat wave striking So Cal this crop couldn’t have come at a better time. Not to mention the jersey fabric sits on your body like a dream. I was a little hesitant to move back into the realm of crop tops but I must say pairing them with high waisted denim and high waisted, loose fitting trousers has really sparked up my interest once more.

Wide Leg Denim

Wide leg denim is making a huge comeback and I had to jump on board. Of course I haven’t made the jump to blue denim (yet) but black denim is the perfect way to make a casual outfit look a tad dressier. I paired my wide leg denim with a t-shirt tunic (to elongate my outfit even more) and some black booties. To get the most out of your wide leg denim I’d suggest wearing some kind of heeled shoe, even if its a only 2 inches or so. That way you won’t get the bunched up bottom look. I have a feeling these will be a great piece to wear to work with a white button up blouse and blazer. Not to mention I picked up this pair from Forever21 for a steal. Like I’ve been saying, the 70s are back in full swing, next up I’ll be wearing denim overall dresses, just you wait and see.

Here is a little insight into what inspires, challenges, and encourages Mary to continue her aspirations as a designer.

1. So, tell me about Mary Byrd, the girl behind Rising Blue Jewelry

I am an apparel designer turned metal entrepreneur. I live in cute Old Town Seal Beach in Southern California with my hubs in our 100 year old apartment above a pizza shop. I love to explore and turn strangers into friends. I love breakfast and coffee. I train Muay Thai, but am too scared to actually fight. I have long hair that’s been growing since I shaved it in college. And, most recently, I have successfully launched a Kickstarter campaign for Rising Blue! Check that one off the list!

2. How did Rising Blue Jewelry get it’s start?

I started Rising Blue Jewelry to create a product that will last for decades. I wanted to find my life’s work and build something little by little until I have a pile of jewels a pirate would be proud of.

3. What’s the inspiration behind the name?

I watched the changing tides during a thoughtful moment on the coast of Bali and fell in love with “Rising Blue.”

4. What is your biggest inspiration for your brand?

I live at the beach and love to stroll along the sand, taking photos of the waves, palms trees, and bikinis. I think this comes through in my tropical, clean aesthetic.
The biggest inspiration comes from the experiences and people I have met on my travels. For example, I was sitting in a cafe in Canggu, Bali. I had stones and chain spread out on the table while I sketched. Milly, the cafe’s owner, sat down and we chatted, generating tons of ideas. Some of those have come to life in the collection.

5. What was your biggest fear in starting your jewelry line and how did you overcome it?

To quote Frank Herbert, author of Dune, “I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it is gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing…only I will remain.”

6. Where was your favorite place you have traveled to?

One of my favorite places is Amed in Bali, Indonesia. It’s a beach at the base of Bali’s largest volcano, Mount Agung. There are no waves, but a stretch of rocky beach that has some of the world’s best snorkeling and diving. There is a sea sculpture garden and a Japanese shipwreck right off shore. Some locals took me out in a tiny catamaran to watch the sun set over the mountain. Stunning. Since Amed is mostly a fishing village, it’s the perfect place for delicious seafood curry.

7. What are your future goals for Rising Blue Jewelry and where do you hope it will take you?

I am passionate about supporting my artist friends. I want to collaborate with and support them as they grow, prosper, and create quality goods. This definitely includes the extended family I’ve found in Bali.

8. Where are you traveling next?

I will be in Bangkok, Thailand in April designing a collection of engagement rings, studying precious stones at the world-renowned gem school in Bangkok, and eating tons of street food. Follow me on my insta @risingbluejewelry and on my blog

9. When will the full collection launch?

The collection will go into production in April, and launch on the in May 2015! Sign up on the email list to be first to know when the collection goes live.

Having a trendy Sandy moment in my leather pieces today. Leather joggers are one of my favorite pieces to wear with a tunic tee and pointed toe boots. I’m also a big fan of having ankle grazing pants, I think they make me look taller (and a tad more elongated). Anytime I’m in a leather piece I feel like my cool factor goes way up, and maybe for that same reason my cool factor goes down. Who knows though, all I know is that this gloomy weather has me wearing any and everything thats warm and waterproof!

It’s been gloomy yet again here in SoCal. For some reason it always rolls around when I want to be outside (go figure). Now, lets talk about the perfect Spring trend top to fit into your wardrobe. I pieced together a fun 70s inspired look on Friday with this Tobi Tangled In Between top. I have a good feeling this top will be on a continuous roll this Spring, it will be a great piece to wear with a pair of my high waisted boyfriend jeans. Until next time! Originally I had paired this with a faux brown leather skirt for a TRUE 70s look but decided to keep it a little more professional with my high waisted loose fitting trousers from Forever21. Anytime I have a pair of cropped trousers on I love to add some height with a small heel, it really helps elongate the body. Not to mention I’ve really missed wearing heels, I guess you could call it lazy girl problems. I’m so excited to see more of these 70s trends come to play this spring, make sure to grab some suede skirts and deep v-neck tops while your at it.
